The first steps to writing are the most crucial steps that one can take in order to ensure a successful process. In planning writing, both the teacher and student interest have to be taken into consideration. The most principle factor in ensuring successful writing is that the teacher must ensure that she plans exactly what she hopes to achieve and how she is going to set about achieving it. In addition to that, the teacher must take into consideration student interests and ensure that sufficient time has been allotted for the completion of each task as well as effective meaningful participation in the writing process. In consideration of the fact that learning to write and writing well is essential for academic achievement and successful business and professional interactions and personal growth the teacher has to take into perspective, exactly what writing experiences that she desires for her students and what strategies that she may employ in order to achieve them. In planning a lesson a teacher has to take into consideration these factors:
· What are ways to get them involved and interested in the writing process
· What are ways that may be implemented to invigorate the classroom.
· What is the teacher’s role in the writing process
· What are effective ways to introduce different aspects of a lesson
It is important that the teacher is knowledgeable about student’s preferences as it will determine the things that will interest and motivate them to write. These things may be used to direct instruction and as well allow students to fully and freely express themselves based on prior knowledge. This will empower students and allow them to feel some sense of personal satisfaction during communication. The advantage of that is that it provides an opportunity and creates an atmosphere within which students are able to create clearly and expressively. There are some effective strategies which may be used to help students write clearly and effectively
· Change teaching strategies and materials
· Get students to list long term goals
· Engage students in writing conferences
· Include various forms of technology as teaching resources
· Allow students the opportunity to share and view each other’s work.
When one engages in the writing process, the main aim is to persuade, inform, convince or to simply tell how they feel: in writing, these are termed the rhetorical modes: persuasive, argumentative, expository and or narrative writing. In exposing students to the different genres of writing, we should inform them of the purpose for each type of writing.
Another main point is that when students write, it allows them to integrate it in other courses. Therefore, students do not learn to write only for the English class but they also learn how to use the different skills and strategies and apply them to other core areas such as Social Studies etc. it also helps them understand the more complicated material and how to communicate effectively.
A teacher must be careful not to limit writing to classroom. Students should be allowed to take their work home and continue writing. A teacher must ensure that she instils within the student that they are writing for themselves. Additionally, she must ensure creativity and meet the standards of teaching at the same time. The advantages of that are, it makes the lesson a lot more enjoyable and easier to internalize the information leading to increase participation among students
Writing allows students to think about their thinking because they are able to manipulate words into exactly what they want and use it in a way that they feel most comfortable. There are instances however, when students are not able to practise writing as effectively as they would love to. They suffer from what is referred to as a writer’s block. In cases like these, when ideas are not coherent, students use webs. Creating webs is useful when students have difficulty getting their thoughts together. For example students may use graphic organizers or free write and or pre write as ways of generating ideas. This allows them to put their thoughts on paper without paying attention to the conventions of writing. After which, they read through and select the most important points that they are able to detail. This actually is one of the first steps to writing.
In conclusion, writing is essential to students and does not only serve its purpose within the language classroom. The steps to writing are crucial in developing very good writers. Additionally, it allows students to think and express themselves as well as explore different alternatives which may make the writing a more interesting and successful one. Writing is a means of getting students to discover how they feel and how they can use the language to structure their ideas. the most rewarding advantage of writing is that it helps build student confidence, self-esteem and awareness when they create their personal pieces.
